Italian Desserts Recipes - Mixed Nut Roll (Rolle di Noci) Recipe

Ingredients                                 

  • 225 g/8 oz short crust pastry (basic pie crust)

  • 45 ml/4 tbsp clear honey

  • 15 ml/1 tbsp liqueur or sherry

  • 50 g/2 oz/1/2 cup flaked (slivered) almonds

  • 50 g/2 oz/1/2 cup chopped hazelnuts

  • 100 g/4 oz/2/3 cup chopped candied peel

  • 2.5 ml/1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 2.5 ml/1/2 tsp grated nutmeg


Method:

  1. Roll out the pastry thinly and brush over the honey. Sprinkle over half the liqueur and then the nuts, candied peel and spices.

  2. Roll up the pastry and nuts to form a long sausage. Place on a baking sheet.

  3. Mix the beaten egg with the remaining liqueur and brush over the sausage-shaped roll.

  4. Bake in a preheated oven at 190°C/375°F/gas mark 5 for 25 minutes.
