Italian Pizza Recipes - Caramelized Onion Pizza (Pizza alla Cipolle Caramellizate) Recipe

Ingredients       

  • 15 ml/1 tbsp olive oil

  • 10 ml/2 tsp semolina (cream of wheat)

  • 3 onions, thinly sliced

  • 1 quantity Basic Pizza Dough

  • 6 rashers (slices) bacon, rinded and chopped

  • 15 ml/1 tbsp chopped fresh sage


Method:

  1. Oil a baking sheet and sprinkle with the semolina. Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan (skillet) and add the onion.

  2. Cook over a low heat for 25 minutes until the onions are soft and brown.

  3. Roll out the dough into a 25 cm/10 in round and place on the baking sheet. Cover with the onions.

  4. Sprinkle with the bacon or pancetta and sage and bake in a preheated oven for 10-15 minutes at 230°C/450°F/gas mark 8.
