Italian Pizza Recipes - Cheese and Tomato Pizza Dough (Pizza alla Margherita) Recipe

Ingredients        

  • 1 quantity Basic Pizza Dough

Topping:

  • 100 ml/6 1/2 tbsp passata (sieved tomatoes)

  • 100 g/4 oz Mozzarella cheese, chopped

  • 1.5 ml/1/4 tsp dried oregano

  • 1 large tomato, skinned, halved and cut in slices

  • 8 basil leaves, torn in pieces

  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

  • 30 ml/2 tbsp olive oil


Method:

  1. Prepare the pizza dough. Spread the risen pizza base with the passata to within 2 cm/3/4 in of the edge all round.

  2. Sprinkle over the Mozzarella, oregano and tomato slices then scatter over the tom basil leaves. Season lightly and drizzle with the olive oil.

  3. Bake in a preheated oven at 230C/450F/gas mark 8 for 10-15 minutes until the pizza is crisp and golden round the edges and the cheese has melted and is just beginning to brown.
