Italian Pizza Recipes - Salami Pizza (Pizza con Salame) Recipe

Ingredients       

  • 25 g/1 oz/2 tbsp unsalted (sweet) butter plus 5 ml/1 tsp for greasing

  • 225 g/8 oz/2 cups flour

  • 5 ml/1 tsp baking powder

  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

  • 2.5 ml/1/2 tsp chopped fresh sage

  • 5 ml/1 tsp chopped fresh basil

  • 150 ml/2/3 cup milk

Topping:

  • 15 ml/1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 onion, sliced

  • 1 garlic clove, chopped

  • 400 g/14 oz/1 large can chopped tomatoes

  • 5 ml/1 tsp chopped fresh oregano

  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 100 g/4 oz salami, cut into thin slices

  • 225 g/8 oz Mozzarella cheese, sliced


Method:

  1. Grease a large baking sheet with the 5 ml/1 tsp butter and set aside.

  2. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt and pepper into a mixing bowl and stir in the sage and basil.

  3. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add enough milk to form a soft but not sticky dough.

  4. Turn the dough out on to a floured board and knead lightly. Roll out to a 25 cm/10 in circle. Lift the dough on to the prepared baking sheet and prepare the filling.

  5. Heat the oil in a frying pan (skillet) and cook the onion and garlic for 2 minutes.

  6. Add the tomatoes and sprinkle over the oregano, salt and pepper. Add the bay leaf. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until pulpy.

  7. Remove the pan from the heat and discard the bay leaf. Spoon the tomato sauce over the pizza. Place the salami slices on top and cover with the cheese.

  8. Bake in a preheated oven for 20-25 minutes at 220°C/425°F/gas mark 7 until golden and bubbling.
